Mother of six, 36, is ‘shot dead by her abusive husband after trying to leave him’

A Texas man is said to have shot and killed his wife and injured two of her children while on the phone with her mother during an argument after she threatened to leave him.

Lawrence Reed, 53, opened fire on Valerie Junius, 36, at the family’s home in Katy, west of Houston, on Thursday night, police said.

Junius fled the house with gunshot wounds to the stomach and arm, a neighbor said ABC13.

Reed then allegedly killed her with a gunshot to the head in a neighbor’s driveway before opening fire on her 16-year-old son and 20-year-old daughter.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Junius’s 12- and 8-year-old children were also in attendance.

Junius’ niece, Stacey Terry, wrote on a GoFundMe that the mother of six was planning to leave her husband and that she was on the phone with her mother Gloria when the shooting happened.

She wrote: “My aunt, Gloria, was on the phone with her daughter, Valerie, as she could hear her husband, Lawrence Reed, say he was going to kill her and her children.

“Gloria then had the horrific experience of hearing Lawrence shoot her daughter Valerie a total of seven times, which ultimately cost her life.”

Police have not confirmed all the details that Terry claimed.

Reed was charged Aug. 1 with the murder of Junius and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Department.

Neighbor Ivory Jackson told how he saw Junius flee her home while she was injured.

He told ABC13: ‘She had shots in her stomach’ [and her] arm.

“He came back out and said, ‘Don’t help her, she’s dead – I shot her in the head.’ I looked inside her head and of course…’

Jackson said his sister heard four or five shots fired from inside the house, while another five were fired at Junius and her children outside.

Reed then barricaded himself at his home and threatened to end his own life.

SWAT vehicles prevented neighbors from parking in their driveways, while hostage negotiators took Reed out of the house for about 30 minutes, the department said.

“The motive for the shooting appeared to be ongoing domestic unrest between Reed and Junius,” police said in an incident report.

Junius’s family told news outlets that the late mother was planning to divorce Reed.

“There were times when my cousin was happy with this man, but there were many times when my cousin wasn’t happy with this man,” Junius’ cousin Treshawnda told Junius. Click 2 Houston.

“I urge you if you have family in unhappy relationships, if you have friends who are in unhappy relationships, to stand by them and talk to them to check on how they are doing.”

Neighbors told ABC 13 there were no outside indications or warning signs that the tragedy could happen.

Police in the area could not be reached for comment, or to confirm whether previous calls to the domestic incidents department had been made.

Both of Junius’s injured children are in stable condition and are expected to recover.

ABC 13 saw the 16-year-old return home in a medical gown, walking and talking.

According to her family, Junius’s children range between the ages of 20 and 4.

‘My cousin was a very good mother to the best of his ability. She loved her children. Everything she did was for her children,’ Treshawnda said.

Reed is being held in Harris County Jail in lieu of $1.7 million bail.
