Claire Louise Hooker, 33, from Canberra, was on vacation with her family two and a half years ago when she realized she needed to do something about her figure, and since then she has taken charge of her health, lost weight and is still feeling never felt better.

Something didn’t feel right on vacation. I felt tired, sluggish and unmotivated, ‘Claire told FEMAIL.

‘I weighed about 109 pounds at the time and was afraid to change, but I knew something drastic had to be done.

“I wanted to be the best possible version of myself, not just for myself but for my family as well.”

When she got home from her vacation, Claire explained that she was going to research diets and different weight loss methods.

“I had just given birth to my ninth child and I was a big fan of quick and easy meals,” Claire said.

I liked carbohydrates and ate a lot of pasta, rice and pizza. My biggest downfall was also cookies and cakes.

“If you take in too many carbs, your body will crash much faster and you can feel pretty tired all the time.”

After some research, Claire ended up on the keto diet – a low-carb, high-fat diet in which carbohydrate intake is drastically reduced and replaced with fat.

This reduction in carbohydrates puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

“I was intrigued by the idea of the keto diet, but also skeptical,” Claire said.

What kind of food does Claire eat now?

* Meat

* Fish

* Eggs

* Low-carb vegetables such as broccoli, zucchini, cabbage and bell pepper

* Bread and cakes made with almond or coconut flour

“I’ve done so many diets in the past and kept thinking, why should this be any different?”

But the 33-year-old was determined to lose weight, so she started to give it a try by replacing ready-to-eat meals and pasta and pizza with low-carb vegetables and cauliflower rice.

“The first week was very difficult because I cut carbs completely and felt very tired,” said Claire.

“But by the end of week one, I had lost nearly two pounds and felt great.”

A typical day on the mother of nine’s plate now only contains 24 grams of carbohydrates per day.

These usually consist of things like meat, fish, eggs, cauliflower rice, low-carb vegetables like broccoli, zucchini, cabbage, and capsicum.

“There are as many alternatives to typical low-carbohydrate foods as you know them,” Claire said.

‘I can bake my own bread, cakes, pies and crackers with almond or coconut flour and they are super delicious.

‘I like baking and coming up with new recipe ideas.’

Just two and a half years later, Claire has lost 35 pounds, and she said she’s never had any more energy:

‘I feel great and it’s great that people compliment me. I am so proud of myself that I stick to my diet, especially with nine children under 13 at home. ‘

While she said she might not stick with the keto diet forever, she loves how easy and delicious she has found it to lose weight.

She now weighs 75 pounds and slips in a clothing size of 10-12.

Claire shared her tips and tricks for others looking to lose weight.

“Do your own research and think about how you can make sure whatever diet you’re on is working for you,” Claire said.

Make time to shop, plan meals, and prepare meals. I find it helpful to be as organized as possible.

“After I do my biweekly grocery trip, I make my own bags of cauliflower rice, zoodles, broccoli rice, and thick cauliflower and broccoli bags.

“I freeze them all and they last about 14 days.”

Finally, the mother of nine said it’s important to stay motivated, positive, and determined.

It’s not always easy to lose weight, but if you try to stay positive, everything will fall into place.

“If a mother of nine can do this, anyone can!”
