‘I didn’t follow the meal plan, I started walking and moving around my house for the low impact days and then started running.’

What had been lunches of white bread sandwiches or pies and pastries from the oven slowly turned into portion-controlled servings of pasta or wraps.

She stopped ‘mindlessly eating’ biscuits with coffee and the leftover sausage rolls on her child’s plate, and began to enjoy vegetables and fresh fruit.

While she doesn’t deprive herself of treats, they are divided in proportion to how much energy she exerted that day.

The secret is good, real food in reasonable portion sizes. It’s resistance training three times a week for most weeks, for three years, ‘she said.

‘It’s daily exercise, to take the stairs, walk to the cafe, dance through the lounge, get at least seven hours of sleep and believe I’m worth the investment of time, to get 30-60 minutes out of my day to take to exercise. ‘

ONE DAY ON A PLATE: THEN AND NOW

THEREAFTER:

“Everything was for convenience, so I ate a lot of prepackaged food,” she said.

‘I thought I was eating pretty healthy. I would eat “healthy” cereals, maybe with yogurt too. I eat muesli bars or protein bars when I’m feeling good, or cookies and chips when I want a treat.

Lunches were white bread sandwiches, or oven baked cakes and pastries. The main meals I often made were meal bases, such as Indian in a pot. But I would always add a lot of naan bread, and never a vegetable. Top it off with dessert.

“I would never say no to the weird snacks, I ate the cookie next to my coffee, or the cake that went around at a party, or the leftover sausage roll on my kid’s plate. Thoughtful eating led to much more food intake than I can probably even remember. ‘

NOW:

‘Now I eat real food, lots of pasta, bread, fruits and vegetables. Lots of variation, but I share it so it matches the energy I am using. I can stick to my portion, I enjoy it and I eat it for the flavors and not to feel better. ‘

Gabrielle has become a certified personal trainer and has released an eBook called ‘If I’m Being Honest’ about her fitness journey and how she encourages others to achieve their dreams.

‘I lost a lot of weight, I gained weight again, I gained muscle, I lost muscle and focused on distance running, I quit running and switched to weights, I started group training, I’m still BBG’ing, I take weeks off, I train hard for days, ”she said.

‘My goals change, so my routine changes, my diet changes, my weight changes, my ability (in different fitness quanta) changes. But the overall change in my lifestyle remains the same. I invest in myself, I celebrate, I give priority to myself and I try to pour from a full cup. ‘
