A Massachusetts man was charged Friday with the murder of his girlfriend and mother of his child on her beach in Maine.

Maine state police said York police received multiple 911 calls reporting that a man assaulted a woman behind a large rock at Short Sands Beach around 4:00 PM.

Arriving officers detained Jeffrey Buchannan, 33, of Bedford, Massachusetts, and found Rhonda Pattelena, 35, also from Bedford, dead behind the rock.

The medical examiner’s office on Saturday ruled that Pattaya’s death was a murder caused by bone injuries to the head. A stone was found on the spot, presumably the murder weapon.

Buchannan was charged with murder and is being held in York County Jail. He first appeared in court at York County Superior Court in Alfred. He is represented by attorney Jon C. Gale.

Judge Wayne R. Douglas of the York County Supreme Court ordered the man to be held without bail and ordered Buchannan to undergo a mental health evaluation.

According to an affidavit obtained by Portsmouth Herald, witnesses reported seeing Buchannan leave the site of the attack on foot before being stopped by police near Railroad Avenue.

Buchannan reportedly told police that he had come to York with his girlfriend when he saw a man running towards them on the beach. He then saw Pattelena making hand gestures behind her, the affidavit says.

He felt threatened and then ‘blacked out’, the document adds. Buchannan said he only remembered breathing heavily and seeing his girlfriend on the floor before walking away.

Buchannan declined to speak further about the alleged attack, the affidavit said.

A GoFundMe for the mother said that she had three children, the two of whom were the oldest 17 and 14. She and Buchannan shared a two-year-old son together.

“Rhonda was a beautiful, loving, caring and generous person, she had such a big heart, she always smiled and laughed,” said Melissa Matranga, a good friend from Pattaya. “She was so full of life.”

Matranga did not approve of Pattelena’s relationship with Buchannan, citing his past violence against the mother. She didn’t know they were back together, Matranga said Boston Globe

Officials said Buchannan had physically assaulted Pattelena at least once. He pleaded guilty to assaulting her and kidnapping her and her two sons from previous relationships in 2017, according to court records. Buchannan was sentenced to two years behind bars.

The Essex district attorney’s office said Pattelena had warned a state police officer at Logan Airport that Buchannan would not let her or her children leave her home in Lawrence.

Matranga said she and Pattelena used “ostrich” as a code word in case the mother ever got into trouble. She believes her friend has been suddenly attacked.

“I don’t think she would have sat there for a minute and done nothing,” Matranga said. “I believe in my heart, she would have texted me.”

Pattaya’s sister Jessica said the mother and her boys moved to Bedford about three months ago. Pattelena took online classes to become a licensed practice nurse.

“She was a great mother and she raised great children. She always did her best for them, ”Jessica added. She had the most beautiful soul you could ever meet. All she ever wanted to do was help people. ‘

“She wanted to improve their lives and she loved the school system there.”
