A woman died of the corona virus hours after the birth of her daughter in Ukraine.

She was admitted to the center on March 10 when she had no sign of the virus, local media reported, but became seriously ill after a 19-day stay in the ward.

Spokesperson for local health authorities, Volodymyr Chemny, said at a news conference: “On March 29, the woman’s condition suddenly deteriorated.

“The oxygen level in her blood has dropped sharply. Her body temperature rose to 39 degrees Celsius [102.2 Fahrenheit].

“She had trouble breathing and developed pneumonia quickly. She tested positive for coronavirus. ‘

On the same day in the evening, Galina brought a healthy 2.5-kilogram (5.5-pound) girl.

Then her condition became critical. She was rushed to intensive care and placed on a ventilator.

Devastated family member Oksana Stasevich said, “We were told she was dying. They let us enter her department and say goodbye to her.

“Galina died hours after the birth of her child.”

Ms. Stasevich believes that Galina has contracted coronavirus in the health facility and blames her staff for the death of the new mother.

She said, “Galina was in a ward with two other women who had a fever. They shared the room for several days before the sick women were isolated.

“A doctor from this hospital told me they confirmed coronavirus cases among staff about three weeks ago.

“Doctors don’t have any protective equipment there. A doctor didn’t even wear a medical mask.

“I’m 100 percent sure Galina was infected in the hospital.”

All employees and patients are now being tested for the virus, with three doctors so far testing positive. Galina's baby has been tested negative

City officials confirm that two doctors contracted the infection a day before Galina was admitted to the perinatal center and another, a local midwife, tested positive for the virus just a few days ago.

The newborn girl was tested negative and is under constant medical supervision, doctors said.

Yury Pavlushynsky, the head of the hospital, commented, “The child’s condition is normal. Her life is not in danger. ‘

All hospital staff and patients should be tested for the disease because of the incident, local media say.

According to doctors, Galina suffered from high blood pressure and obesity.

On Thursday, Ukraine officially registered 897 cases of the infection, with 20 killed.
