Just weeks before her daughter was murdered by her then-fiancé, Charlise Mutten’s mother wrote a “goodbye note to the cruel world” apparently saying she was ending her life.
The memo, which was released with a ton of evidence following Justin Stein’s conviction for Charlise’s murder, indicated problems in Kallista Mutten and Justin Stein’s relationship.
Ms Mutten, who had been living with Stein on her family’s Wildenstein property at Mount Wilson in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, wrote notes to him in a special purple book.
In an entry about Christmas 2021, after arguments with Stein stemming from her mother’s criticism of her, Ms. Mutten, who was pregnant at the time, wrote about ending her life, which she did not do.
The entry said: ‘Justin, I’m hurt and I’m sorry I left because I was upset because you were upset because I took things out of my pocket and I was just embarrassed with your mom.
‘I’m going to go and give everyone a favor and leave this cruel world. I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough for you.
‘Please keep Charlise in your life. Tell her I’m sorry for being a bad mother and not being there for her.
‘I’m sorry I dragged you down. It’s too much to bear.

The note reflected Kallista Mutten’s depression during a serious drug addiction and when her relationship with Justin Stein was not going well.
‘I love you and I will always be by your side through this and the next. Good things will come to you now that I’m gone.
‘It’s not you, it’s Me! Be strong and know that your life will be better now that the bad juju is gone…those dark people will let you go. I love you Justin 4eva.’
Ms. Mutten’s relationship with Stein had been marred by a full-blown methamphetamine addiction.
Stein said at his murder trial that his mother, antiques dealer Annemie Stein, had not liked Kallista “from the beginning.”
Stein’s trial also played 17 recorded phone calls between Justin and Annemie Stein following his incarceration following his arrest in January 2021 for Charlise’s murder.
On calls, mother and son call each other ‘Narelle’, a pet name derived from a humorous 1990s TV commercial for Holeproof socks.
In phone calls from jail, Justin Stein seemed to have a good relationship with his mother Annemie and managed to joke with her despite being locked up and accused of murder.

In one particular call, Stein refers to what police believe are firearms he hid in the bush, including the .22 rifle they say he used to kill Charlise.
In the call, he tells Annemie, “I have something I want to ask you to do.” I need you to recover some things in the mountains.
You know I borrowed certain things from my friend to take care of those drones. I left them in the bush for a bit.
Annemie replies: ‘Oh, I think they found them, they showed me pictures… in the bush. I have a feeling they might already have them. They showed me many things. I don’t know why you had them in the first place.
‘I’m not going to get into that. The murder weapon is not found because she had it… I don’t know where she would have thrown it.
Justin Stein was found guilty Wednesday of the murder of Charlise Mutten and will be sentenced in August.
