A mother confessed to having dumped her lifeless body in an empty place in northeastern Mexico after initially telling the police that her daughter had been kidnapped.
The five-month-old Karol Nahomi Tobias was found dead Wednesday afternoon wrapped in a blanket under a tree near a pawnshop in Saltillo, Coahuila.
Surveillance images showed the mother, Ana María Maltos, who walked with the baby and left without her a few minutes later before allegedly telling residents in the Bellavista neighborhood that her child had been abducted.

Ana María Maltos told the authorities she didn’t know what to do with her dead daughter and placed her lifeless body next to a tree after she initially told the police that a man and a woman had kidnapped the girl
However, the baby died of suffocation in her home and had no physical injuries except some scratches, according to Gerardo Márquez, attorney general of the northeastern state of Coahuila,
Márquez said that Tobias was sick for a few days and that her mother might have abandoned her because she was afraid of her daughter’s biological father.
“The minor’s disease allows us to conclude that it has led to broncho aspiration and that the mother has not noticed it,” Marquez said, adding that the results of the preliminary investigation do not indicate that the girl is abducted.

Maltos, who is also the mother of an older boy, told the authorities that her daughter was taken from her by a man and a woman who jumped out of a yellow taxi and fled into it Tuesday at about 2:30 p.m.
Several Mexican news channels have been given access to a surveillance video that shows when Maltos is walking with Tobias, who is tucked away in a blanket on Tuesday at 2.27 p.m. local time.
The security camera captures Maltos a second time, at 2.41 pm, but without her daughter.
Witnesses said Maltos rushed to a supermarket with tears over her face, about two minutes after she was seen on the security video.

Investigators secure that area where Karol Nahomi Tobias’s body was dumped by her mother on Tuesday after she told the police that a man and a woman had abducted her daughter outside a supermarket in Saltillo, Mexico
However, Maltos later admitted that she had dumped her daughter’s lifeless body and told the police that it was because she did not know what to do.
A patrol from the Saltillo municipal police responded to a call from 911 and found Tobias’s body shortly after noon.
The public prosecutor is currently investigating Maltos, who has been detained, and has also interviewed at least a dozen witnesses, including family members.
The son of Maltos, who is at least two years old, has since been taken into custody at the local childcare agency.
