Moses Thurairajasingam was denied bail after allegedly stabbing a policeman

A mentally ill teenager who allegedly lured police to his home before stabbing an officer was expecting to be shot dead.

The court heard that shocking body camera footage and CCTV footage taken from his own home captured the moment Moses Thurairajasingam lashed out at the unsuspecting police officer.

Thurairajasingam appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon where he faced multiple charges including assaulting an on-duty emergency worker, causing serious injury with intent, common law assault and making a false report to police.

The court heard that just hours earlier the diagnosed schizophrenic had asked his sister if stabbing a police officer would result in him being shot.

She had dismissed the 18-year-old’s ramblings, unaware that it was an alleged plot he was about to put into action.

The court heard Thurairajasingam dialled triple-0 at 4.35pm on Tuesday with a false report about an intruder breaking into his Cranbourne West home. southeast of Melbourne and assaulted him.

When police arrived about 40 minutes later, Thurairajasingam was outside waiting for them with a 13cm knife allegedly hidden behind his back.

The footage shows Thurairajasingam running towards the unsuspecting police officers, who had no time to react.

“Fuck, I’ve been stabbed!” the officer shouted as he staggered backwards.

‘Ah, fuck.’

The court heard Thurairajasingam shouted “shoot me” three times before the wounded officer’s partner wrestled him to the ground and handcuffed him.

“I want to be shot so I can go to heaven,” the deranged teenager told him.

The court heard the injured officer suffered a 5cm deep wound to his leg which required surgery.

Opposing bail, Detective Senior Constable Ashley Hall said Thurairajasingam knew exactly what he was doing when he allegedly “lured” police to his home.

“It was a calculated attack,” he warned.

The court heard that Thurairajasingam had been living with his family at the time of the attack and had been taking medication for his mental illness.

He had applied for bail in hopes of being released and sent to a secure facility while awaiting his next court date in November.

Police argued that Thurairajasingam posed a threat not only to them, but to his own family and anyone who encountered him.

“We’re afraid he might stab someone,” the detective said.

The court heard that Thurairajasingam had no history of violence and had never come to the attention of police before Tuesday.

In refusing bail, Magistrate Stephen Ballek accepted that Thurairajasingam was too great a risk to the community to be released.

Outside court on Wednesday, Thurairajasingam’s family declined to comment on the alleged attack outside their home.
