Local media identified Sergey Smurov the victim. He was trapped within an annex of the mall and was subsequently killed in the blaze.

A Fatal Inferno Swept Through The Mega Shopping Centre Near Moscow In The Early Hours Of This Morning, Leaving One Person Dead

One person was killed when a fatal inferno swept through the Mega shopping center near Moscow in the early morning hours.

The scene captured flames lighting up the sky as well as dark smoke billowing into space. Scores of people fled the burning building and made their way to a parking area. 

More than 70 firefighters were involved in putting out the fire. The fire covered 7,000 square meters (75,300 sq feet).

According to Telegram, “Due to the collapsed roof, the fire spread immediately to a large area,” the emergency services of the Moscow region stated.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which investigates major crimes, stated that it was investigating the cause of the fire.

According to the Moscow region’s emergency services chief, the blaze appeared to be caused by safety regulations not being followed during repair work.

Sources claimed that the fire started at the OBI outlet for home improvement, which was a German-based chain that closed soon after the outbreak of war in Ukraine. 

A local man stated that the fire started from the roof. He didn’t know the origin of the ignition. The fire grew quickly.

“Literally five minutes later the entire roof was already in flames.

“And after ten minutes, everything developed rapidly, and the lower level was already ablaze.”

Mega was home to many Western retail chains, including one IKEA store in the Moscow region.
