Moroccan authorities canceled a concert that rapper “Bubba” was scheduled to perform in Casablanca on June 21st, following a campaign to boycott it because he was accused of insulting Moroccan women in some of his songs, the organizers told AFP.
In confirmation of information published by the Moroccan magazine “TelQuel”, an official in the party organizing the party responded with “yes” to a question about the fact that the aforementioned party was canceled.
The same source, who asked not to be named, indicated that this cancellation is due to the refusal of the local authorities of the Casablanca district (Anfa) to grant the necessary license to hold the party in the large Moroccan city.
And the Moroccan newspaper “Hespress” wrote on Twitter: “The organizer of the French rap concert “Bubba” in Morocco announced the cancellation of this concert, after the great controversy that followed it through social media platforms and the fierce campaign that affected it from Moroccan activists who demanded to boycott it because of what the singer did. Offensive words against Moroccan women.
The concert sparked controversy recently in Morocco, where the artist is widely popular with the rap audience.
These calls were based on excerpts from the singer’s work, whose real name is Eli Yafa, which were considered offensive to Moroccan and North African women.
The news of the party’s cancellation was welcomed by Internet users, as one of them wrote on Twitter, “Union is strength.”
On the other hand, another Internet user criticized what she described as “hypocrisy” in Morocco against the background of the cancellation decision.
An electronic petition, whose authors demanded the cancellation of the concert because of the “insult” that affected the Moroccan people as a result of the decision to host the singer in the country, collected nearly 4,500 signatures.
Calls to boycott the concert were supported by well-known trade union and party bodies in the country, but the organizers remained, until the last moments, hoping that the musical event could be held.
“Bubba” accused the French rapper of Moroccan origin “Mais” and the singer “Mater James”, who lives in Morocco, of being behind the boycott campaign.
