Prosecutors in Paris say the player has been charged by a judge and placed under judicial supervision.
Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has been charged with rape, French prosecutors have said.
The prosecutor’s office in the Paris suburb of Nanterre said Hakimi was questioned on Thursday by investigators investigating allegations of rape. He was subsequently charged by an investigating judge and placed under judicial supervision.
Hakimi, 24, has been banned from contacting the alleged victim, a 24-year-old woman who says she was raped by Hakimi at his home in a Parisian suburb on Saturday. According to the prosecutors, Hakimi is allowed to leave French territory.
The Madrid-born defender helped Morocco make World Cup history last year by becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. He trained with PSG on Friday.
Prosecutors began their preliminary investigation on Monday.
Under French law, an indictment does not necessarily mean that the case will go to court.
Rachel Flore Pardo, the alleged victim’s lawyer, told AFP news agency: “My client maintains everything she said. She has chosen to speak exclusively to prosecutors and does not want the affair to become a media issue, mainly to protect her safety.”
A PSG spokesperson said the club “gives its support” to Hakimi and “puts its trust in the justice system”.
The player’s lawyer, Fanny Colin, said Hakimi “consistently denies all allegations against him” and that he was the victim of “an attempted extortion”.
She said Hakimi welcomed the charges against him because “he finally has the opportunity to defend himself”.
Hakimi appeared on stage at the FIFA Awards in Paris on Monday. He was honored as part of the player-selected men’s all-star team and was greeted with short, loud applause when he was introduced.
Hakimi progressed through the youth system at Real Madrid before joining Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga in 2018. He went on to play 73 matches for the German club.
He moved to Inter Milan in 2020 and then PSG in 2021, where he has established himself as an integral part of the team and formed a close friendship with star striker Kylian Mbappé.
