A spooky scene unfolded in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, as Winnipeg Jets forward Morgan Barron skated in the face while scrim in front of the net and snowboarded on the spot.
But with this being NHL playoffs, Barron is back on the ice after less than a full tenure – after getting more than 75 stitches in the locker room.
With players down as Golden Knights goaltender Laurent Brossoit scrambled to deflect the rebound off the net nine minutes into the game, Chandler Stephenson pushed Barron into Brossoit’s skate, which landed Barron on the riding side of his face, near his eye.
Midway through the second period, however, Barron returned to the game—his first appearance in a playoff game—with a large bandage covering the cut even though blood and part of the cut was still visible. His team earned a 5-1 victory over the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Jets coach Rick Bowness said of Barron’s return to action, “He’s been looking at me. ‘I’m ready.'” I said, “Do you need a little skate or something?” Then he said, “No, I’m ready to go.” And of course he went right in and bumped into someone.

Barron had 75 stitches and incredibly got back in action as the Jets beat the Knights 5-1
“This is Winnipeg Jets hockey, which we’re all in. Morgan is a perfect example of that. Give him a lot of credit. It takes a lot of guts, to get 55 stitches, no matter what, and that was a very dangerous cut.”
Barone said he was able to return because Skateboarding “missed anything important”.
He joked afterwards that his first thought when it happened was ‘what if the puck had gone in – it was sitting so close to that.
They did a great job stitching me up, obviously missing my eye. I was glad it didn’t put me in a real bad place, but they did a great job fixing me up. It’s not bad actually.
It’s very hard for anything to happen with the cage. You get on the adrenaline. I was obviously really excited about my first playoff game and went from there.
It conjured up memories of hockey’s most horrific injury in 1989 when Klink Malarchuk of the Buffalo Sabers collided with Steve Tuttle of the St. Louis Blues and teammate Uwe Krupp.
Tuttle’s blade slashed Malarchuk’s neck, severing the artery. Blood flowed onto the ice, causing some fans to faint. The trainer present had to close the artery and it took 300 stitches to close the wound.
So Barron could feel relieved to avoid something that could easily have been a lot worse. Teammate Adam Lowry said Barron’s return gave the team a huge boost during the game.

You assume a stick, but you see and hear about the replay on the break, and you hear how many stitches he was getting. I thought they said 15 and not more than 50.
“It looked like he was attacked by a shark, to be honest,” Lowry said. “It’s a scary thing.
We’re all so worried about the puck crossing the line and then all of a sudden we see a trail of blood basically from the crease all the way to the bench. You don’t know what happened.
To sit at the table, to sew and miss an hour of work and come back, you talk a lot to his heart. It’s hard to get back up when you’ve been sitting for a long time.
Barron ended up playing nearly 11 minutes and recording three blocked shots in the Jets’ 5-1 rout in the opening game of their first round series against the #1 seed in the Western Conference.
Barron, 24, played in 70 games in his first full season with the Jets. He had eight goals and 13 assists – both career highs.
