More than 500 people were evacuated from Swinburne University in Victoria after a suspected contamination in a science lab.

The teams of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade were summoned to the Hawthorn campus of the University on Friday afternoon.

They were responding to a "gas depletion alert" in the basement of science and technology laboratories.

Firefighters in hazardous materials suits, along with police and paramedics were called to the scene.

Traffic along John St and Burwood Rd was briefly interrupted due to the incident.

University spokeswoman Julia Scott said the fault was "sensor failure".

"The building has already been cleared and the students were able to return at 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon," he said.
