The work tells the story of María Callas, an American-born Greek soprano who was one of the most recognized and influential opera singers of the 20th century.
Despite having a career of more than 30 years as an actress, Maria Callas: Cartas y Memorias marked Mónica’s theatrical debut.
Monica, who suffers from stage fright, told Opera Wire about her role: “I knew the great singer, the performer. Even when I did Mozart in the Jungle, I approached Callas to get the attitude, like I did with (Anna ) Netrebko and (Montserrat) Caballé.
‘But I didn’t know anything about Maria, the Onassis story, or that she was an incredible diva, Divina. But then when Tom Volf came to me with this project, he gave me these letters, these memoirs, and I realized the woman, the person. It was a completely different story because I was able to delve deeper into his vulnerabilities and his sensitivity.
‘That’s why, even though it was my first time on stage when I read those letters and memoirs, I couldn’t resist. I said, “I’m scared, but I want to do it because those letters and memories really inspired me and I want to share them with someone else.”
Maria Callas was born in 1923 and died in 1977 and enjoyed an affair with Jackie Kennedy’s second husband, Aristotle Onassis.
At the end of her premiere, Monica kindly took some time to interact with fans who were behind a barrier.
