Shocking moment when lorry driver is caught using only his elbow to steer 44 ton car transporter over M40

This is the shocking moment when a lorry driver was caught using only his elbow to steer a 44 ton car transporter down the M40.

Footage shows the lorry driver driving down the motorway near Gaydon in Warwickshire without using his hands.

Police caught the driver endangering other motorists while patrolling the roads in an unmarked truck cab.

In the video, the truck driver can be seen resting his head in one hand while leaning his elbow on the steering wheel while the other hand is folded over his body.

When he notices that he is being watched, the driver quickly grabs the steering wheel with both hands – but the police had already warned colleagues and asked to pull him over.

The footage was released by National Highways as a result of a week-long campaign to tackle unsafe driving on highways.

During the national road safety project ‘Operation Tram Line’, the police registered more than 33,000 violations.

Eight police forces patrol the motorways in unmarked National Highway taxis between London and Leeds.

Jeremy Phillips, National Highway’s head of road safety, said: ‘We are committed to reducing deaths or serious injuries while traveling on our roads by 50 per cent by 2025 and we have a long-term ambition for zero damage.

“To achieve that, we need to address the unsafe driving behavior that we unfortunately still have to deal with.

“Hundreds of thousands of motorists use our roads every day and the vast majority are sensible behind the wheel, but some are putting themselves and others at risk.

‘With this action week we want to encourage motorists to think about their driving behavior and to adopt safer behaviour.’

He added: “But those who continue to pose a risk should be aware that we are working with our police partners to ensure they are spotted and prevent them from causing serious harm to themselves or others.”

Commander Kyle Gordon, Chief of the National Police Chiefs’ Council for Roads Policing Operations, said: “We are delighted to be working once again with our key partner National Highways as we work to reduce the danger posed on one of our busiest roads, and beyond. by drivers who are distracted while driving.

“Too many people are killed or seriously injured on our roads every year.

“My officers must visit the families of the victims on our roads five times a day, every day of the week and every month of the year.

‘I am happy to support all initiatives that can help to reduce these numbers.’
