According to the Mexican newspaper El GráficoMiranda’s murder was committed by members of a local gang led by Jonathan ‘Lenin’ Canchola because they refused to pay extortion charges for the right to operate his fitness center, Olympia.

Canchola, whose gang reportedly operates out of the Cuajimalpa y Álvaro Obregón neighborhoods in Mexico City, is a sought-after authority on a long list of crimes, including kidnapping, extortion, robbery and drug trafficking.

Miranda survived an August 2018 assassination attempt that killed his brother, Juan, when Canchola’s gang of hitmen shot the same vehicle that Miranda was driving at the time of his death.
