A Ukrainian man dressed as a woman and carrying his sister’s passport has been detained while trying to flee the country.

The 44-year-old man was detained on the border with Romania by the Ukrainian State Border Service after they became suspicious of his large physique.

They also suspected that he was trying to avoid mandatory military service.

Under current laws in Ukraine, men between the ages of 18 and 60 are prohibited from leaving the country and are instead expected to enlist in the Ukrainian army to fight the Russians.

Posting a video on social media, border guards wrote: “The lovely ‘Sergietta’ planned a trip abroad.

“A 44-year-old resident of Zolotonsha, disguised as a woman, tried to cross the border into Romania with his sister’s passport.”

The post, which has now been viewed more than 13,000 times since it was uploaded on Monday, has been inundated with comments.

One viewer joked: “Great, Agent 007.”

Another, referring to Biedronka’s rival Lidl, posted: “Lidl will not recover from this.”

Another asked: ‘What will your sister do now?’

But others were more somber, with one viewer writing: “Not surprised.” Any way to avoid death on the front is good.

During the large-scale invasion of Russia, Ukraine introduced a ban on men between the ages of 18 and 60 leaving the country if they were called to fight.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, approximately 30 men have died trying to flee and, according to the Ukrainian Border Guard, around 10 are detained each day for trying to escape the country and avoid conscription.

In November last year, the BBC reported that almost 20,000 men had fled Ukraine since the start of the war.

There are exceptions to the draft if a person is medically ineligible, is caring for three or more children, is raising a child alone, or is raising a child with a disability.
