One mom shared her simple trick for checking if your pillow has expired — explaining why you should replace them “every year or two” to avoid sleeping on something that’s full of bacteria.

Chantel Mila, from Melbourne, said that although you may not know it, pillows have an expiration date.

“Pillows contain dust, skin cells and oils, so they expire after one to two years,” Chantel writes TikTok.

If you have a synthetic model, it should be replaced as often as every six to 12 months, while with a down pillow you should check every two to three years.

Fold your pillow in half on a surface, then keep it folded for 30 seconds.

“Pillows should bounce back when they’re fresh,” Chantel said.

If they don’t bounce back, it probably means it’s time to invest in a new model.

Some said they wash their pillows regularly and asked if this is enough.

“It’s definitely still important to wash your pillows every quarter,” Chantel said.

However, if you own synthetic pillows and haven’t replaced them in over a year, it’s likely they’re expired.

Chantel has built a huge following on TikTok, where she shares helpful household tips and tricks, as well as product recommendations.

The first is by sprinkling half a cup of baking soda and four drops of essential oil of your choice on your mattress.

Chantel uses Dream Drops from Eco Modern Essentials, which contains a ‘soothing blend’ of scents consisting of lavender, geranium and ylang ylang.

“Then leave the mixture on the mattress for an hour and suck off the excess to make it smell great,” Chantel said.

The second way to make your bedroom look and smell incredible is to put on clean sheets.

The reason this works is because the water will tackle the creases and gently loosen any creases that may have formed in the washing machine.
