A woman was stunned when her daughter brought home a $33 (20 euro) bill after eating two slices of leftover birthday cake at her aunt’s house.

Jenny*, 38, shared that her daughter Carly, 17, regularly babysits her cousins (ages seven and nine) for $12.50 an hour on weekends.

The teenager recently ate two slices of a two-week-old lemon curd cake while working, and her aunt was “furious” that she reached for the “expensive” cake without asking.

“I apologized and said I would talk to my daughter, but my sister said the cake was custom-made and cost 116 Australian dollars (70 euros), so we should compensate her,” Jenny shared on Reddit.

‘My sister says I’m being inconsiderate and that my daughter ate the slices without permission. I feel like she’s being mean and what difference would it have made if they had eaten it all last weekend or at her birthday party? she asked.

Jenny provided more information about the situation in her post.

‘I am a single mother to my teenage daughter, Carly. She babysits her cousins on the weekends so my sister and brother-in-law can go out, usually for about four hours. In exchange, my sister gives him $50 in cash.

‘We don’t make Carly babysit, she volunteers because she likes having extra money without having to work part-time in fast food or retail, plus the kids love being able to see her. She’s glad she’s learning to be responsible. “I think it’s a win for everyone.”

But Jenny recently received a phone call from her furious sister.

‘Two weeks ago it was my niece’s birthday and there was leftover birthday cake in her kitchen. It was an elegant lemon curd cake and I remember the kids didn’t want to eat it, so there was a lot left over.

‘While babysitting, Carly ate two slices. My sister said the cake was custom made and expensive, and she says we should make it up to her. I honestly thought she couldn’t be serious, but she wanted me to give her money.

“I mentioned that the cake will surely go bad soon if it’s not already stale. I said it cheerfully, trying to lighten the mood, but I made it clear that I DON’T GIVE YOU MONEY.”

But her sister refused to budge and continued to demand $33 for the “stolen” cake.

Many were shocked by the sister’s atrocious behavior, with many pointing out how “easy” she had it with cheap childcare.

“The only reason there’s leftover cake left in the first place is because the sister was completely inconsiderate about what kind of cake a nine-year-old might want for his birthday party,” one said.

“If the cake is that old I would never touch it I would just throw it in the trash,” wrote another.

‘Did you charge people at the party for the cake? Maybe that’s why there’s so much left,” said one.

‘Your sister is going to be shocked when she finds out what a babysitter really costs. “Two pieces of cake are nothing,” wrote one mother.

But others blamed Jenny for her “bad parenting.”

‘Pay damages. “She is a minor and you are responsible,” one man wrote.

‘Your daughter doesn’t need to help herself with people’s things when she is trusted to be left alone while she looks after the children. She is supposed to be responsible. “This is about good manners,” added another.

“You’re an idiot for letting your daughter think it’s okay to go through people’s fridges and closets for food without permission,” said a third.
