Maryland authorities have charged a mother with attempted murder after allegedly trying to cut her three-year-old daughter’s throat with scissors before turning herself over.

That said the Montgomery County Police Station on Monday press release that 28-year-old Anne Catherine Akers was charged with one attempt of second-degree murder, one time of sexual assault in the first degree and once of child abuse in the first degree.

A relative of Akers called the emergency number to the mother’s home at 13,000 block of Hathaway Drive in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, near Washington DC, at around 10:50 AM, after finding blood on the floor of the house.

Officers who responded to the house found blood on the floor, along with the scissors.

According to police, Akers was found on the bedroom floor with a crack on her neck.

Police began to assess the mother’s injuries, and while removing a blanket Akers was holding, she discovered her three-year-old daughter with a “life-threatening tear on her neck.”

Officers immediately began life-saving measures for the girl, and a Maryland State Police helicopter took her to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Doctors treating Akers’ daughter told detectives that without the officer’s help, the girl’s injuries would have been fatal, police said in the release.

Akers was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The mother is currently being held without bond at the Central Processing Unit.
