Shannon had a few supporting roles on shows such as In Living Color, Twin Peaks and The John Larroquette Show before joining the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1995.

She was best known for her physical comedy, especially with the character Mary Katherine Gallagher she created, although she has stopped making the physical comedy in recent years.

When asked when that changed, she said, “Before I had children. I did that crazy physical comedy where I would throw myself in chairs and do more dangerous things, and now that I’m a mom I just don’t want to do that. I feel different in my life and I don’t want to hurt my body like that anymore. I’m much more careful.’

When Ross asked if it ever hurt, Shannon said she never felt the pain when she performed, but the next morning she would be “bruised, bleeding and cut.”

“I kind of liked how it felt because I felt like I was working really hard and really immersing myself in the performance,” she said.

When asked about “harsh feedback” that really motivated her, Shannon said she was going to do headshots and the photographer said, “Why are you so ugly?” who killed the panel.

‘Yes! And his girlfriend was sitting next to him, she was a model, and she said, “Shut up, that’s so mean,” and giggled. Then we started the photo shoot,” she said.

She added that she now doesn’t look at herself while filming and wants to look natural while performing.

‘I want to be natural. I want to get older. I don’t want it to affect my performance, and even to this day, actually just now, we did a photo shoot, and I caught a quick glance and I was quick to think, ‘Wow, I look older,’ she said.

“And that’s hard, but I thought, ‘It’s okay, honey.’ And I have to work on that, I’m not going to fool you. I think someone once said that people want you to freeze at the age you first became famous,” she said, adding that she’s trying to be “gentle to myself.”
