Eric Stonestreet admits he was hurt when the network cancelled his Modern Family spin-off.

The 53-year-old Modern Family actor, who recently slammed “fake” people in Hollywood, admitted on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast Sunday that he and his on-screen co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson were initially set to get their own show.

‘(Modern Family co-creator) Chris Lloyd and a couple of writers wrote a really great script that took Jesse and me back to our life in Missouri, and they said, ‘No,'” he explained.

“They just said, ‘We don’t want to do it,'” he added.

The Emmy winner also revealed that he thought the network scrapped the project because they viewed him and Ferguson as “old.”

The Kansas native said, “I think Jesse and I maybe felt like we were considered the old guys or something, that we didn’t seem worthy of keeping up those characters.”

And although he felt disappointed, he understood that the decision was not in his hands.

“It was a little painful, but people make business decisions,” Stonestreet said.

However, the actor admitted that if the show had been created, it would have been a sure-fire hit with viewers.

He shared: ‘I don’t think it wouldn’t have been a success, because one of the creators, who had really put in a lot of effort to make sure the show was great for so long, was willing to do it.’

Stonestreet also teased a possible Modern Family reunion, admitting that such a possibility has been in the works.

“I would like us to do a Christmas special, that has already been talked about,” he said.

Modern Family premiered on September 23, 2009, on ABC and ended on April 8, 2020. The show created a stir at the time and had consistent viewership ratings.

It aired for eleven seasons and produced an impressive 250 episodes.

The cast also included Ed O’Neill, Rico Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Nolan Gould, Julie Bowen, Ariel Winter, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
