Detroit Tigers broadcaster Matt Shepard made an awkward on-air comment during a game against the Cleveland Guardians over the weekend.
The show’s cameras cut a woman in the stands wearing a Guardians jersey and a cap with a white veil on the back – apparently at a bachelorette party during the football game.
Shepard was reading a promo, but opted to comment on the woman in the stands with a fairly innocuous statement.
“She’s about to get married, isn’t she?” That’s why she’s wearing that outfit, isn’t it? And she’s at a baseball game. Good for her, Shepard said.
But when the camera brought her back drinking a beer, that’s when the broadcaster joked: ‘Nothing sexier than a girl drinking a Leinenkugel’ – in reference to the drink in her hand.

Fans on social media were quick to berate Shepard for his comments and
The comment generated a lot of backlash on social media with people made uncomfortable by the advertiser’s comments.
‘A lot of sad guys in the replies are wondering what the deal is, and while it’s far from the worst thing a broadcaster has done, it’s still shady and utterly unnecessary. I can only hear the director’s annoyed sigh after laughing.
“Women can’t exist without a man feeling the urge to comment on what she’s wearing, who she’s with, or what she’s doing. This woman deserved better from this @Tigers show.’
A man who applauds the University of Michigan said, “Can we please, for God’s sake, find someone else.
Another Twitter user simply remarked, “Comment trustworthy.”
In the AwfulAnnouncing ranking of MLB broadcast booths in 2023, Shepard and the Tigers finished dead last.
