A cafe has sparked outrage for the incredible prices it charges for its $27.90 smashed avocado on toast meals.
Mitcham cafe in Melbourne’s east attracted attention for the menu taped to its window and a customer shared a photo on Reddit.
Their ‘Smashed Avo’ comes with two poached eggs, crumbled feta, pumpkin hummus, melody tomatoes, toasted seed mix, lightly toasted sourdough bread and a lemon wedge.
Traditionally larger meals on the menu were cheaper, such as the fish and chips, which cost $1 less and was priced at $26.90.
The customer couldn’t get over the exorbitant price and wondered why the mashed avocado cost more.
‘I’m not here to name and shame a local business, but when did the humble smashed avocado on toast cost more than fish and chips? Is this the norm elsewhere? they wrote.
“I almost fell off my chair paying $5.89 for a medium coffee in Mitcham.”
The smashed avocado meal wasn’t even the most expensive item on the menu: a calamari salad was $32.90 while an open-face steak sandwich was $35.90.

Other expensive menu items included eggs benedict which cost $22.90 and cost an extra $6 for salmon, $4 more for bacon and an extra $2 for spinach.
A bacon and egg roll cost customers $18.90 and a brunch burger was on the menu for $25.90.
Social media users were quick to criticize the very high prices of the foods on the menu.
“Eating out has become crazy,” one wrote.
“I’m lucky to work on an industrial estate where a roast beef and salad roll costs $10 and even comes with a handful of chips if you eat it there.”
“It’s like they’re taking advantage of Millennials/Gen Z’s overreliance on UberEats and lack of cooking skills. Fight the system and create things yourself,” said one.
Another added: ‘The price of these brunch staples is the reason I stopped going to this brunch. It just has to be unique, otherwise I’ll make my own avocado toast for 1/5 the price.’
Others defended coffee prices.

‘At least it includes two eggs. Most places still charge $20 and make you pay more for a single poached egg,” one person wrote.
A second added: “As soon as I saw there were two poached eggs I thought it was ‘ok.’
‘A place near me charges $22. If you want eggs you have to pay $7 extra. After all, it’s expensive everywhere.’
A third Australian wrote: “It’s actually not that bad given a lot of places charge $25 without poached eggs.”
But other Australians saw it as a sign that coffee was probably just “holding on” and could be struggling financially.
‘For the most part, you don’t pay for the food (partly); “You are paying the rent, the electricity and gas bills and their workers,” one wrote.
‘This is inflation, this is what it looks like. I don’t work in this industry, but all of your costs have gone up: rent, supplies, utilities, etc.,’ one said.
Another cafe owner added: “You can buy a struggling cafe business for $12 and a bag of chips right now, they’re going broke left and right.”
“This poor bastard is probably suffering from daily panic attacks because he knows that no one or even fewer people will want to buy his product at that price, but if the alternative fails, what is he supposed to do?”
