John Terry has branded the BBC a “disgrace” after the broadcaster mocked Cristiano Ronaldo for his penalty miss in Portugal’s win over Slovenia.

With the score at 0-0, Ronaldo had the chance to score the winner from the penalty spot in extra time, but his shot was saved by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

As they showed the replay of the penalty, the BBC added the title ‘Misstiano Penaldo’, prompting a furious reaction from former Chelsea star Terry. In an Instagram story, Terry claimed: ‘BBC, this is a disgrace.’

Ronaldo was left in tears after missing the penalty. However, the 39-year-old managed to redeem himself by scoring from the spot as Portugal won 3-0 in the shootout to qualify for the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr teammate Sadio Mane also defended Ronaldo when he wrote: ‘You are still a great champion! CR7.’

Terry knows all too well what it feels like to miss a crucial penalty in front of the world – the Chelsea captain slipped and hit the post when he had the chance to win the Champions League against Ronaldo’s United in Moscow in 2008.

The former Chelsea and England captain was in tears after that miss, so he knows how Ronaldo felt.

Fans were also shocked by the BBC’s decision to mock Ronaldo.

One user wrote on X: ‘This is not real in any way!’

Meanwhile, another user claimed that Ronaldo can no longer be compared to Lionel Messi.

Portugal has now qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament, where it will face France.

Ronaldo’s side scored all three of their penalties in the shoot-out and Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved three penalties against Slovenia.

Speaking about his tearful reaction after the match, Ronaldo said: ‘When I think about my family, I get emotional because these are unique moments, which I can’t put into words, they are people I like, fans who are always with us and especially with me and I’m very happy about that.’

She added: ‘You can’t be afraid, I’ve never been afraid to face things, sometimes I do well, sometimes I don’t, but giving up is something you’ll never hear from my name.’

Ronaldo, who is playing in a record sixth European Championship, is yet to score in the tournament, apart from his goal in the penalty shoot-out.
