Missouri drivers can spice up their vehicle by creating a personalized license plate for just $15.
However, not all applications are approved, as these humorous rejections from last year show.
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, more than 8,000 applications for personalized car tags were processed in 2023 and 475 were rejected.
For a personal design to be approved, the requested plate must not violate state obscenity laws.
Missouri law requires that license plates not be “obscene, profane, patently offensive or derogatory toward any racial or ethnic group, or offensive to good taste or decency.”

Last year alone, almost 500 applications were rejected.
Among the rejected plates were plates with the letters ‘H8GVMT’, ‘0 SHIZZ’ and ‘F – SAKE’.
Other names deemed inappropriate for use were ‘1TNY PP’, ‘DFWME’ and FKWOKE.’
‘5L0WAF’, ‘FB1CAR’, ‘G0LF69’, ‘PFAAF0’, ‘FCRDF0’, ‘UFAUF0’, ‘BEAUCH’, ‘CANABL’, ‘KCM0AF’ and ‘B1SHHH’ were also returned to the sender.
Drivers can make their creative requests for personalized plates in person at the DMV or by mail.
Reviews are conducted manually by multiple state employees before a license is approved.
The Revenue Department also detected and rejected inappropriate messages and words in Spanish and Korean.
The state also rejected a number of applications that mocked President Biden or referenced drugs or violence, according to the Kansas City Star.
