A seven-year-old Missouri boy burned badly after another child sprayed it with a nail polish remover and set it on fire with a candle.

Julien was playing outside his house at the Hawthorne Place apartment complex in Independence when an eight-year-old boy covered him with a nail polish remover.

Ashley Lyons, Julien's mother, said she kept telling the other boy to stop and leave him alone. Then the boy grabbed a candle and set it on fire.

A neighbor hurried out with a wet towel and threw Julien to the floor before being taken to the hospital.

He suffered severe burns to his face and arms and may need skin grafts.

"The burns were so bad that they had to go right in and have surgery," Lyons told the WDAF. "They had to scratch their faces and all their skin."

And Lyons said that Julien's internal organs could also be affected.

"We really do not know why he inhaled the flames," he said. "The smoke deteriorated inside their nostrils."

"It will take three to six months to find out if the lungs could still collapse, if we are going to have to do skin grafts."

The doctors told Lyons that the skin could take two to three years to regrow, and that the burns could affect the color.

"It's a very painful process for him," Lyons told the Kansas City Star. "There's a lot of anxiety. There is a long rage. There is a lot of confusion. "

"He's trying to keep the best he can, for a seven-year-old child."

"He's a beautiful baby inside and out," he said. "I love my grandson so much, no matter how he looks."

Lyons was not home at the time, but said his son was being watched by his older brother and another adult.

She said that the mother of the eight-year-old boy, who also lives in the compound, was present when she lit Julien in flames but did nothing to help.

It is not yet clear why the boy sprayed Julien with nail polish remover.

But Lyons said the complex has had a long history of problems.

"It has the highest crime rate in Independence," he said.

"Our officers have an excellent working relationship with the administration in the complex and with the citizens who live there," said spokesman John Syme.

"They have made great progress in working together to prevent crime and address problems when they arise."

"The officers assigned to Hawthorne have told me that they have definitely seen a reduction in crime and require service from the implementation of those efforts."

Since then, the department initiated an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, Lyons has started a GoFundMe campaign for medical bills and Julien funds to help the family move out of the complex.

"The hospital is trying to free it soon, and we are developing a housing plan, but there is no housing plan," Lyons said. & # 39; This is not safe & # 39;
