A driver was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after a horrific four-truck crash on a busy motorway, before two ambulances responding to the scene also crashed.

A B-double truck crashed on a stretch of the Bruce Highway south of Miriam Vale, near Gladstone in central Queensland, at around 1.50am on Tuesday.

The semi-trailer then collided with two other trucks before two ambulances that were sent to the scene also crashed.

Queensland Police said four trucks in total were involved in the crash after emergency services were initially notified of a single-vehicle collision.

The truck drivers were trapped in their vehicles and a driver in his 50s suffered serious injuries.

The man suffered head, hip and leg injuries and was rushed to Gladstone Hospital.

A witness said Nine news Ambulances were forced off the road after one of the trucks tried to reverse on the motorway.

Paramedics treated five other people who suffered minor injuries before being taken to hospital.

A man in his 20s was taken to Gladstone Hospital after suffering head and leg injuries.

Another 20-year-old man was taken to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition after suffering head, chest and leg injuries.

Two other passengers were treated at the scene but did not want to be taken to hospital.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said there were multiple road closures.

The highway, which stretches for 98 kilometers, is expected to remain closed for most of the day.

“Motorists travelling between Gin Gin and Miriam Vale are advised to slow down and drive with caution as smoke is causing poor visibility in the area,” the spokeswoman said.

‘Full road closure at Gin Gin and Miriamvale. Detour at Gin Gin is via Mulgrave Street which becomes Bundaberg Gin Gin Road then Rosedale Road then Lowmead Road, to Tablelands Road, Fingerboard Rd to Miriamvale. Not suitable for HGVs.’

The Bruce Highway between Gin Gin and Miriam Vale stretches for a distance of around 80km.

The accident is believed to have been caused by poor visibility, with heavy smoke and fog covering the road.

It is known that fires were being carried out to reduce risks near the accident site.
