A truck driver watched pornographic videos on his phone shortly before he caused a fatal highway crash in Minnesota, officials say.

Tate Doom, 47, was charged Friday in Hennepin County District Court with criminal vehicle murder and criminal vehicle operation in connection with the October 2018 crash.

The man from St Paul Park was reportedly driving through a construction site on Interstate 94 in southeastern Minnesota when his half-beaten vehicle hit a pickup truck with a trailer attached to it.

As a result, the trailer was separated from the truck before plowing 59-year-old Vernon Hedquist, a construction worker standing by the side of the road.

Hedquist was killed by another employee, 64-year-old Thomas Wood, was injured by rubble.

Shortly after the crash, Doom removed fourteen Pornhub.com videos from his cell phone before troopers considered it evidence.

Highway video showed the pick-up truck that was driving in the center lane of the highway at around 50 miles per hour.

Doom told the police that he was so fast when he crashed, but prosecutors said he would go about 72 mph in the 70 zone.

He also denied using his phone while driving. A law prohibiting drivers from keeping their phone on the road will take effect on August 1.

Doom is being held in prison instead of $ 30,000 bail. He is ready to argue at a hearing on 12 August.
