A Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota blocked two separate efforts to keep transgender women out of women’s sports, calling such measures “bigoted” and “appalling.”

Angie Craig is currently seeking her fourth term in Congress, where she represents Minnesota’s 2nd District, a large area that encompasses much of the southern metropolitan area.

In 2020, former Republican Representative Tulsi Gabbard proposed a new law known as the ‘Women’s Sports Protection Act of 2020.’

If passed, the law would have effectively prevented schools that receive federal funds from allowing transgender women to participate in women’s athletics.

However, just one day after the bill was introduced, Congresswoman Craig condemned it as “bigoted” and “appalling,” and criticized the measure as “beyond acceptable.”

In a statement, she said: “Queer and transgender women must stand together in the face of bigotry.”

“I am proud to do so today and strongly denounce this hateful and narrow-minded legislation, which is harmful not only to transgender women but to the LGBTQ community as a whole.”

Although the bill did not advance in Congress, lawmakers later introduced similar legislation that won broader approval.

Congressional Republicans proposed the ‘Protecting Women and Girls in Sports Act’ in April 2023.

“I am proud to do so today and strongly denounce this hateful and narrow-minded legislation,” Craig said.

Like its predecessor, the legislation would have prevented schools that receive federal funding from allowing transgender women in women’s sports.

The bill was subsequently voted on and passed along party lines by a margin of 219 to 203.

Congresswoman Craig attempted to kill the bill and voted against it.

On Wednesday, Joe Teirab, Craig’s Republican opponent in the upcoming election, attempted to draw a stark contrast between himself and the incumbent president.

Teirab wrote on X.com: ‘Men should not compete against women in sports. Common sense, right?

“It’s a simple matter of justice and security, and this new UN report shows that hundreds of women around the world lost medals to biological men.”

The Republican challenger then attempted to use Craig’s own words against him.

‘But @AngieCraigMN voted against the “Women’s Sports Protection Act,” calling the effort “transphobic,” “bigoted” and “hateful.”

‘So for the vast majority of Americans and Minnesotans who believe men should not compete against women in sports, you @AngieCraigMN calling them transphobic, bigots and hateful?’

Teirab is far from alone in believing transgender women should not compete in women’s sports.

In August, a group of college swimmers testified before the Georgia Senate about their negative experience competing against a transgender athlete. They also revealed that they had to share a locker room with them.

She has been a strong supporter of the USA Powerlifting association in its effort to keep sex-specific leagues before the Minnesota Supreme Court. McNabb has drawn on his experience as a cautionary tale.

“I was partially paralyzed when a man, who identified himself as a woman, threw the ball at my head,” she said in a recent news release shortly after filing an amicus curiae brief with the court.

‘Women just can’t prepare for that kind of game environment. It can’t be that the law requires us to accept this as the price for playing women’s sports.’
