Introducing unlimited ‘safe and legal routes’ for asylum seekers would lead to ‘millions’ of migrants coming to Britain, officials warn.

Home Office experts were asked to calculate the impact of opening the UK asylum system to foreign applications – as proposed by Labor and refugee groups.

Official models concluded that “millions upon millions” of migrants from around the world would be drawn here by such a policy, the Daily Mail has learned.

There would be huge demand from a pool of 100 million people displaced by conflict and disaster around the world.

A UK Home Office source said: ‘We clearly couldn’t sustain this number of people coming in. It would be absolutely wonderful and I can’t imagine the British people wanting to see millions more people come to the UK.’

The Interior Ministry is already struggling to clear a backlog of 166,000 cases, after almost 75,000 new applications were received last year.

A wave of arrivals would also put enormous pressure on housing and public services. It comes as new laws are unveiled next week to deal with the small boat crisis.

The Mail reported yesterday how Rishi Sunak is trying to capitalize on the ‘momentum’ gained from the Brexit breakthrough.

The measures, tentatively titled the Illegal Migration Bill, will include a range of measures to counter the arrival of the English Channel.
