An urgent search and rescue operation is underway after two swimmers failed to surface at Millaa Millaa Falls, approximately 90 kilometres southwest of Cairns.

Three friends jumped into the water and as one of them did not come to the surface, his friend went into the water to look for him.

The friend, also a man, was rushed to hospital.

The men are believed to be between 20 and 30 years old.

Emergency services responded to reports of two missing people at around 8.55am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said four crews were at the scene to assist the Queensland Fire Department.

A rescue helicopter is on its way and police and the Queensland Ambulance Service have been called to the scene.

“We are tasked with assisting in the search and rescue of two people who went missing at the falls,” the spokeswoman said.

“We have four units responding. One of them is a search and rescue helicopter.

‘A third man was taken to hospital.’

Millaa Millaa Falls is a popular tourist attraction and one of the most iconic waterfalls in the Far North.

In March, a 20-year-old international student went missing after jumping from a ledge into the water at Crystal Cascades, west of Cairns, and failing to surface.

Emergency services launched a search and rescue operation and divers recovered his body the following day.

The tourist is believed to have been swept downstream after swimming at the top of a waterfall, an area marked as a no-swimming zone.

Crystal Cascades is a popular swimming destination for locals and tourists alike, but it is also the site of numerous drowning deaths.

In April 2023, a father and son, aged 59 and 21, were declared dead after being found unconscious in the waters near the falls.

More to come.
