Military of Turkey says 25 soldiers injured in accident

The Turkish army says that 25 Turkish soldiers were injured in an accident during the firing of heavy ammunition.

In a statement Friday, the Ministry of Defense said that seven other soldiers were missing after the accident, which took place at the military base Sungu Tepe in the southeastern province of Hakkari. The province borders both Iraq and Iran.

The office of the Hakkari governor said the explosion was caused by the firing of "defective ammunition at the base.

It is not clear whether the accident occurred during a combat mission or an exercise.

The Ministry of Defense said that the wounded soldiers were transferred to a hospital, but gave no details about the seriousness of the injuries. The ministry said that an investigation has been started.

The predominantly Kurdish southeast of Turkey was the scene of skirmishes between the Turkish army and the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Turkey also regularly carries out air strikes on PKK bases in northern Iraq.
