Miley Cyrus Shares Details of ‘Really Scary’ Lightning Strike on Tour Plane on NBC Talk Show

Miley Cyrus shared details of the lightning that struck her tour plane as it flew over South America on Monday’s episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers.

“It was really scary,” said Miley, 29, dressed in a pink dress and sporting blonde hair with brunette tips. ‘I was on my mum’s lap because he was pretty sure he didn’t care about seat belts at the moment…crying because he was scared.’

Miley said unexpected weather hit her plane in March when she was traveling to her next show.

“We had to do this crash landing and we were in the middle of South America and I was actually on my way to a show, which at the time had been flooded and cancelled,” Miley said.

She said that her bandmates still insisted that they try to do the show.

“Okay, no, we’re in the middle of the woods on a broken down plane,” Miley recalled. There’s flooding where we’re supposed to go, the stage is sinking.

Miley said instead that her group went straight to Brazil where they played a couple of days later and recovered.

“We were all a little traumatized,” Miley said.

Miley also shared that she would be doing another NBC New Year’s Eve special.

“I’m kind of a go with the flow person, but now I seem to know what I’m going to do in New Years forever, which I like because I need limits,” Miley said.

“I know I have to keep my composure long enough to make it through the New Year,” Miley said. “And that NBC will actually allow me to be on television because there were a couple of years there where it was risky, live television.”

“I wasn’t asked to do a lot of live TV,” Miley said in reference to her wild twerking days.

Seth asked her what it was like to work with 28-year-old Pete Davidson, with whom she co-hosted the New Year’s special last time.

“He kept joking about not showing up,” Miley said. But you know, like the truth of every joke, that’s what makes it funny. So I got really nervous the fifteenth time he joked about not showing up. But she showed up and did an amazing job.

Seth also asked Miley about her T-Mobile Super Bowl commercial with her famous godmother Dolly Parton, 76.

“It was amazing because I was doing it on the phone, but every time I contact Dolly it’s still by fax,” Miley said. She rarely talks on the phone.

“We use the phone, but she sends a fax, and then someone scans the fax and then they put it in a text message and send it to me,” Miley explained.

“She also demoed me once where she talks about being super high-tech, but it was all through a cassette, which she then did a voice demo on a flip phone, which someone then put into the iPhone, which then was sent for me,’ Miley said.

Seth asked about his version of Dolly’s song ‘Light of a Clear Blue Morning’ during his appearance last May on Saturday Night Live. Miley shared that it was actually Lorne Michaels, the show’s executive producer, who made the last-minute decision on the song, and then Dolly sent her a fax applauding her performance.

“She loves it and she loves it when I introduce my fans to music in a way that is still me,” Miley said. ‘Dolly doesn’t want anyone to copy and paste. She doesn’t want anyone to just sing her songs. She wants them to integrate into her music.’

“I think Dolly is the most loved person on the planet,” Miley said. “She’s got big hair and big boobs and she’s made this big mark on the whole world that all of us are just trying to fill her crystallized shoes, which is just never going to happen.”

Miley appeared on the show to promote her new live album Attention: Miley Live, which is a fan-created tracklist.

“It’s been two years since we celebrated live music together,” Miley said. “To be honest, I’m still getting used to getting out of this cocoon that we’ve all been in for the last few years. I think many of us have been struggling with anxiety and fear and have become socially accustomed to connecting with each other again. I thought it would bring some hope and joy and also make me feel more comfortable knowing that my fans are happy, knowing that I can express to them how much I have missed them in the last two years.

For Miley, the album wasn’t her only way of giving back, she also does so through her Happy Hippie Foundation.

“I felt very lucky in my life,” Miley said. ‘I have had parents who really support me in all my decisions and in all my evolutions. I’ve really been experimental when it comes to my identity, my sexuality. I really feel like I’ve had a very supportive family and I know that’s not the case for everyone. I wanted to simply fight against that injustice and everyone deserves the freedom to express themselves, no matter how they identify.

“That’s been important because, again, everything I think about comes from a place of authenticity for me first, because it’s hard to relate if you feel like you don’t relate to that same struggle. So even though I’ve had a different experience, I relate to that,’ she said.

“I love it,” added Miley. I am pleased.

Attention: Miley Live was released on April 1 by Columbia Records.

Rewarding work: 'I love it. It fills me up,” Miley said of her foundation's work.
