Reflecting on the song’s lyrics, Detroit-born Posner did a verse-by-verse comparison on his X account.
Introducing the post, she wrote: ‘On my 26th birthday, I wrote I Took a Pill in Ibiza… 10 years ago. The song became popular several years after he wrote it. Yesterday I celebrated my 36th birthday.

‘I feel proud to look at the lyrics of the song and know that NONE of them are true anymore. I have become a whole new man…one I am proud of. Look at this…’
He went on to explain how, although the song’s lyrics give the impression of a person who lives carefree and enjoys life in Ibiza, one of the most popular party destinations in the world, he is a completely changed man after turning 36.
Directly comparing the lyrics to how he feels when he’s 30, Posner wrote: ’26: I took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool and when I finally got sober I felt 10 years older but fuck it, it was something to do
’36: I love myself more than ever, I no longer do shit that damages my body to try to make people like me.’
Singer Mike Posner has shared a touching life update to celebrate his 36th birthday, revealing he wrote hit single I Took A Pill In Ibiza ten years ago.
Contrasting some of the more melancholic lyrics that reflect on himself as an artist who “doesn’t want to be stuck on that stage singing,” he said that at 36 years old, he was “the happiest I’ve ever been in my life and I hold faith.” , love and a (joyful) mindset for over a year and I’m not going back.”
Referring to another chorus from the hit single that goes “All I know are sad songs,” Posner now shared that he feels much more comfortable and adept at managing his emotions.
And he added: ‘I know sadness and pain very well, I also know how I overcame/overcame it. It is my duty to teach others to do the same. I know sad songs, but I also know songs of redemption, songs of freedom, songs of faith and songs of devotion.”

The artist’s remarkable and inspiring revelation comes after he wrote the song after taking an impromptu trip to Ibiza with Swedish DJ Avicii, who tragically took his own life in 2018, after writing a song with him.
Explaining the song through an online music encyclopedia. Genius, Posner said the trip to Ibiza came after writing a song with Avicii in Sweden and deciding to follow the DJ to the island where he was performing because he had never been before.
‘We were at his show and I was drinking at the time. And I just walked into the audience to see Avicii spin from her point of view,” she said.
Posner explained that he took a pill after a chance encounter with a fan who recognized him while walking between the VIP and general admission areas of the venue.
‘So I took one and I’d never done it before, and it felt amazing. Then when I came down, I felt ten years older,” she recalled.
