Longtime assistant to Mike Pompeo, Toni Porter, has been identified as the government official at the center of an inspector general investigating whether the Secretary of State had a taxpayer walking his dog and doing other errands.
Pompeo asked President Trump to fire the inspector general of career, Steve Linick, in a move that has echoed since Trump ordered the move late Friday night.
It has since been revealed that Linick has investigated allegations that Pompeo had an official government agency do food, do laundry or walk with his beloved dog Sherman.
Mike Pompeo, assistant Toni Porter, has long been identified as the government official whose role was allegedly doing personal business before the Secretary of State was investigated by an Inspector General
The Kansas City Star reported Tuesday that Linick was investigating the role played by Porter, a senior Pompeo adviser, and “whether she was a politically engaged Pompeo’s personal business during the government,” the newspaper said.
The investigation began after “multiple complaints” at an IG hotline, a source told the newspaper, and did not come from Porter himself.
Porter was a district director of Pompeo when he was a congressman from Kansas. Then she followed him to the CIA and on to Foggy Bottom.
President Trump defended Pompeo Monday after the story exploded – although neither Trump nor Pompeo mentioned it at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
“He’s a high-quality person, Mike. He is a very brilliant man, ‘said Trump at the White House on Monday. “And now you tell me about walking dogs, washing dishes and you know what, I’d rather have him on the phone with some world leader than wash him, because maybe his wife isn’t there or his kids aren’t” “You know, Trump said.

The deposed Inspector General of the State Department is said to have investigated claims that Mike Pompeo, in the photo, had an employee walk with his dog Sherman and pick up his dry cleaner
Two officials have now told NBC Linick whether Secretary of State Pompeo had the employee perform the personal duties, including making dinner reservations for the Republican and his wife Susan, pictured in September 2019
Trump announced late Friday that he fired Inspector General, Steve Linick, in the photo, an appointed Obama administration whose office criticized what it saw as political bias in the management of the State Department
“I’d rather have him on a leash with some world leader than wash him off because maybe his wife isn’t there or his kids aren’t – you know,” President Trump said, defending Mike Pompeo against charges he had a government employee do chores for him
“You tell me it’s awful. It is so stupid. Do you know how stupid that sounds to the world? Incredible, ”said Trump.
According to her LinkedIn page, Porter was Pompeo district director as of 2011. She also worked in real estate and as a volunteer in Pompeo in 2009. She studied at Kansas State University and is a founder of the HopeNet society teacher. Like Pompeo, she seems to be a dog lover.
A Kansas source described her role for the Star as “a combination of chief of staff and executive assistant.”
A 2018 Politico article identifies Porter as “a somewhat vague role in which she performs all the tasks Pompeo asks her to do, including serving as a point of contact for others in the department.” She was his chief of protocol at the CIA.
