Amid a stadium-wide serious moment, a New York Yankees fan was heard booing Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman.
During a break in play in the top of the sixth inning, the entire Yankee Stadium rose from its seats in a ‘Stand Up to Cancer’ moment.
Each member of the two teams emerged from their respective dugouts, holding signs with the names of the people they were “defending” as the stadium did the same, falling into relative silence as somber music played.
The cameras focused on Freeman, who wrote on his card that he was defending ‘My Mom.’
But as the broadcast continued, not even ten seconds later, the microphones picked up a Yankees fan yelling, “You stink Freeman.”
A Yankees fan was heard booing Dodgers star Freddie Freeman in a somber moment.
Freeman’s mother, Rosemary, died after a long battle with melanoma when Freddie was just 10 years old, and the first baseman honored her memory by wearing a long-sleeve shirt during games.
“My mom was my rock,” Freeman told Shared pain in 2015. ‘(She did) everything she could to make sure I was doing what I loved and what I loved was baseball… It was definitely a very difficult time.
‘I didn’t know any kids who lost another parent, so I just focused on baseball. All I did was baseball and I did it as much as I could so I could focus on trying to hit a round ball with a round bat instead of my mother.
Even as a father, Freeman has gone through his own personal tragedy with his three-year-old son Maximus.
Earlier this year, Maximus was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disease that causes muscle weakness caused by immune system damage to the nervous system.
Fortunately, Max only spent eight days in the pediatric ICU before being discharged over the summer. According to reports in August, Max is undergoing physical therapy and is expected to make a full recovery.
That heckler wasn’t the only fan making a name for himself at Yankee Stadium last night: A fan interfered with a catch by outfielder Mookie Betts in the first inning.
That fan was later ejected from the game, but surprisingly will be allowed to return to Yankee Stadium for Wednesday night’s Game 5.
Freeman has been huge for the Dodgers in this World Series, hitting a home run in every game.
But despite their first inning in Game 4, the Yankees ultimately prevailed.
Freeman has made this postseason unforgettable, especially in the World Series.
He may have won a title with his former team, the Atlanta Braves, back in 2021, but Freeman has been a hero for the Dodgers this postseason.
The eight-time All-Star and 2020 National League MVP has been monumental for Los Angeles, batting .250 this postseason, hitting four home runs and driving in eleven runs.
That includes a heroic explosion in Game 1 that made him the first person in World Series history to hit a walk-off grand slam.
Freeman has hit a home run in every game of this World Series so far, including one last night to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
But the Yankees finally woke up after three straight losses and came back to win the game 11-4.
Game 5 is Wednesday night in the Bronx, with the Yankees hoping to send the World Series back to California and the Dodgers hoping to clinch an eighth title.
