Microsoft and Sony in Call of Duty console deal

Date:

Microsoft and Sony agree to keep Call of Duty on the latter’s PlayStation game consoles

Microsoft and Sony agreed yesterday to keep Call of Duty on the latter’s PlayStation game consoles.

It comes as Microsoft hopes to court competition regulators with its £60 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which makes the video game.

Watchdogs are concerned that the acquisition could stifle competition in the gaming market and mean that Microsoft, which owns the Xbox brand, could restrict the use of popular games on other consoles.

But in a bid to please regulators, the tech giant said it had struck a deal with rival Sony to keep Call of Duty on its devices.

Earlier this month, the largest gaming deal in history moved one step closer to completion when a US appeals court said it would not stop the merger.

In Britain, the Competition and Markets Authority blocked the deal in April after concluding it would lead to “reduced innovation and less choice for UK players”.

Microsoft has said it was now focusing on pleasing British regulators to make sure the deal can go through.
