Michael Slater breaks down in court as he is refused bail after harassment and assault charges

Former cricketer Michael Slater harassed a woman and sometimes sent her more than 100 text messages a day, a Queensland court has heard.

The 54-year-old faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning after his case was adjourned yesterday.

Slater has been charged with assault occasioning bodily injury, strangulation, unlawful stalking, breaking and entering a dwelling at night and four counts of common assault.

Slater sat in the dock wearing a green prison uniform during his appearance and collapsed to the floor when Magistrate Raelene Ellis denied his bail application.

Prison officers helped Mr Slater to his feet.

The court heard police allegations that Slater increasingly sent unwanted text messages, made phone calls from private numbers and left voicemails.

“Impulsive and reckless”

The court heard that a motion sensor detected Mr Slater at the alleged victim’s home just before 10pm on Friday, April 12 this year.

The court heard Slater was filmed on a security camera allegedly shouting abuse from outside before smashing the kitchen window, climbing through it and assaulting the victim.

Police said authorities were called and Slater was taken to Nambour General Hospital for treatment for injuries caused by the broken glass.

The court heard Slater has underlying mental health issues which can result in “impulsive and reckless” behaviour.

Slater’s lawyer, Michael Robinson, said his client could immediately attend a rehabilitation center in New South Wales.

But Slater was denied bail and his next court appearance was scheduled for May 31.
