Michael Schumacher's family wins case against publisher over fake interview with AI

Michael Schumacher’s family has won its lawsuit against the editor of a magazine that published an artificial intelligence-generated interview with the multiple Formula One champion.

The German celebrity magazine Die Aktuelle promoted on its April 2023 cover the words: “Michael Schumacher, the first interview!” He also wrote “sounds deceptively real”, with the alleged quotes attributed to Schumacher generated by AI.

Sabine Kehm, the family’s spokeswoman, told the Associated Press by email on Thursday that the legal action was successful, without commenting further. The amount of compensation was reportedly 200,000 euros.

The German publisher, Funke magazines, apologized to Schumacher’s family last year for the article and fired Anne Hoffmann, editor-in-chief of Die Aktuelle. “This tasteless and misleading article should never have appeared,” Funke CEO Bianca Pohlmann said at the time. “It in no way meets the journalistic standards that we and our readers expect from a publisher like Funke.”

It was while skiing in the French Alps at Meribel that Schumacher fell in December 2013 and suffered a near-fatal brain injury. His head hit a rock that broke his helmet. Since he was transferred from hospital in September 2014, the seven-time F1 champion has been cared for privately at a family home in Switzerland.

Schumacher, 55, retired from F1 in 2012 after winning 91 races and five consecutive titles with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004. The German driver’s other two titles came with Benetton in 1994 and 1995.
