Michael Douglas has revealed that he was confused with his daughter Carys’ grandfather during her recent high school graduation in May.

The actor, 76, who shares Carys, 18, and Dylan, 20, with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, 51, discussed the family milestone on Tuesday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Michael said it was “a little rough” but insisted he wouldn’t take it “personally” because the other parents were “just trying to be nice” during the ceremony.

He said, ‘It was so amazing, I’m so proud of her. But I have to tell you Kelly, it’s a little rough when you go out the door and the other parents say, “Oh congratulations, you must be so proud of your granddaughter.”

Michael added: “I said, “Well, I don’t know, man. Yeah, okay.” I’m not going to take it personally, they’re just trying to be nice.’

The actor also admitted that he and Catherine are concerned about becoming “empty nesters” since graduation, as their son Dylan, who is currently a student at Brown University, has already moved out of their childhood home.

Michael said, ‘It’s scary. It is real. You look at each other and say, “Well, it’s just you and me baby.”

The actor revealed in May that Carys had graduated from high school and shared a collection of sweet photos on his Instagram to mark the milestone.

In one fell swoop, Michael and Catherine beamed with pride with Carys, who wore a white dress suit, and Dylan.

Another photo showed Dylan lovingly picking up his sister while holding her diploma.

Michael wrote: ‘Congratulations to Carys and the entire class of 2021! Your mom and I are so proud of you! We love you so much and we are so looking forward to your future because the best is yet to come! ❤️ Dad.’

The actor revealed in a 2019 interview with Weekly closer that his daughter had decided to go to boarding school.

The previous year, Carys discussed her school life with City and Country and said she was often faced with “mocking comments about her father’s age,” she said, “People would say, ‘Your grandpa is coming to pick you up.'”

Earlier this year, Carys celebrated her 18th birthday and her mother Catherine shared a sweet post on Instagram, writing: “You are everything, and everything is you. Thank you for the joy you bring me.’

The morning of her birthday, Cerys texted her mother, “Thank you for giving birth to me!” to which Catherine replied, “Oh, the birth of you was my proudest moment!”

Catherine then joked: ‘Wait……….. Oscar?…….. No……… Absolutely YOU!’ and added two crying laughing emoji at the end.

She won her Oscar in 2002 for her supporting role in Chicago – and during both the filming and the awards ceremony, she was pregnant with Carys.

In a recent Today show interview, Catherine gushed that her “extremely smart” kids both want to follow their parents into the acting world.

“Michael and I would be the first parents to say, ‘You know, maybe you should think of a different career,’ but we’ve seen how passionate they are about the profession,” she said.

Catherine and Michael welcomed Dylan in August 2000 and were married in November at the iconic Plaza Hotel on 5th Avenue.

Carys, whom Catherine was heavily pregnant with when she danced at the Oscars and received her Chicago trophy, arrived in April 2003.
