Mexican teen found dead in motel water tank in Escobedo, Nuevo León was raped and murdered

A second forensic report revealed that Mexican teenager Debanhi Escobar was raped and murdered before her body was found in an underground water tank at a motel after a night out.

The 18-year-old girl was repeatedly hit in the head with an object and was already dead when her body was thrown into the cistern of the Nueva Castilla Motel in Escobedo, Nuevo León, according to the report obtained this Thursday by The country Newspaper.

Escobar met up with two girlfriends, identified as Sarahī and Yvonne, for a night out on April 8 and was reported missing on April 9 after she failed to return home.

The body of the law student was discovered inside the water tank on April 21, but a forensic report from the Nuevo León Attorney General’s Office was vehemently rejected by her father Mario Escobar.

The report states that Debanhi’s death was due to a blow to the head, but that she was still alive when she fell into the cistern and that there was no trace of water in her lungs.

Believing his daughter was murdered, Mario Escobar announced on April 25 that he would exhume her body and called for an independent study into the death and criticized the attorney general’s office for withholding details of the investigation.

The new coroner’s report found that Debanhi had bruises on both sides of her skull, on both eyelids, on both lips, on the left side of her nose and above her right ear.

“Craniofacial contusions are of external origin to the body and because they are intense, repeated and with different angles of impact,” the report said.

“It is inferred that they were caused by another person and that this is a violent homicide.”

The medical examiner’s findings revealed that Escobar was also raped by her alleged assailant.

The body shows traces of a recent violent vaginal intercourse. This follows from finding purple bruises,’ the report showed.

The latest forensic report also rejected claims by the Nuevo León state medical examiner that Escobar was alive when she ended up inside the water tank.

“She was already lifeless at the time of (ending) in the water… where the body was found,” the study showed.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with Escobar’s parents on Friday morning during his visit to Nuevo León and said he “promised to help clarify what happened and ensure that there is no impunity.”

López Obrador also ordered the Nuevo León Attorney General’s Office to meet with the family later in the day and provide details of the ongoing investigation.

Escobar’s case has attracted international headlines due to a disturbing photo taken by Juan David Cuellar, a driver for the ride-sharing app, showing the law student standing on the side of a road several blocks from the motel.

Cuellar picked up the teen and her two friends on April 8 and dropped them off at a party. Several hours later, one of the girls contacted him via WhatsApp and asked if she could pick up Escobar and take her to her house.

Escobar could be seen on surveillance video entering the vehicle through the left rear door.

As they walked away, she told him that the girls were bad friends because they had left her behind.

Cuellar recalled Escobar crying and tried to get her home address, but she refused to provide it.

He then sent a message to one of the girls, asking for directions to Escobar’s house, but she also refused to give it to him because she didn’t know.

He then asked for a cell phone charging cable and got out of the rear passenger seat and sat in the front.

Cuellar said Escobar was making incoherent comments, but once again asked for his address.

She asked Cuellar to drop her off at another party, but when they got there, she didn’t come out.

Escobar then told Cuellar to take her home, but then asked him to stop and got out of the vehicle.

I turn to look at her and I think she’s going to throw up. I stop, she opens (the door) and goes out. She gets off to the side of the road… I stayed there for a minute, then I see that she jumps to the median,’ Cuellar said.

Cuellar took a photo of Escobar and sent it to one of her friends as proof that he was no longer in his car.

“I parked for about three minutes, to see if she would think twice (about staying there), but when she didn’t react, I left,” he said.

Before getting into Cuellar’s car, additional security camera footage showed Escobar arguing and being chased by a male individual who appeared to hit her before she slapped and kicked him.

His two girlfriends and several young men rushed to intervene.

A second camera showed Escobar wandering down a highway before returning to the sidewalk and stopping near a trucking company before continuing to walk toward the motel.

Multiple cameras there recorded her running onto the property and walking around the side of a motel restaurant, where she stopped and looked through one of its glass doors before disappearing from camera view.
