The acclaimed Mexican actor Emilio Echevarría died at the age of 80, it was announced this Monday by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences.
The star, who appeared in the James Bond film Die Another Day and the Brad Pitt ensemble Babel, died on Saturday.
He is also known for the role of El Chivo alongside Gael García Bernal in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s gritty underworld film Amores Perros from 2000.
And he carried out two more projects with Bernal: Y Tu Mamá Tambien and Mozart in the Jungle.
The star was born in Mexico City and began acting in the 1970s. He became a national treasure after being nominated three times for Mexico’s Ariel Awards.

The star appeared in the James Bond film Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan in 2002.
Although he entered the acting world in the 1970s, he didn’t get his big break until the late 1980s.
Echevarría’s first role was in Intimidad in 1989 and he later performed Intimacy in the Bathroom and Los Pasos de Ana.
Her first major role came in the twisted drama Amores Perros.
The bilingual star then had a major role in the 2001 film Y Tu Mama Tambien with Bernal, as well as notable Mexican actor Diego Luna, best known for Narcos.
He then starred as Bond’s intelligence agent and ally, Raoul, opposite Brosnan, in Die Another Day in 2002.
Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike were also in the 007 adventure that took place in North Korea and Cuba.
Emilio was then in The Alamo (2004) by John Lee Hancock.
He is also known for the role of El Chivo opposite Gael García Bernal in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s gritty 2000 underworld film Amores Perros.

He played a man named Emilio in the 2006 film Babel, which also starred Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.
Other credits include 1990’s Dying in the Gulf, 2015’s A Monster With A Thousand Heads and 2018’s The Chosen.
Those three performances earned Echevarría an Ariel Award nomination.
Emilio also worked with his friend Bernal on Mozart in the Jungle (2015) about the maestro Thomas Takes His Last Bow with the New York Symphony.

Emilio is survived by his daughter, actress Lourdes Echevarría, who has been in Dark Cities and Mother’s Love.
