Diekman, who signed a one-year, $4 million contract last offseason, was signed to be a high-powered left-handed pitcher along with Brooks RaleyBut Diekman’s stay in Queens did not go as planned.
Over the course of 43 appearances this season, Diekman pitched to a 5.63 ERA. He struck out 40 batters in 32.0 innings, but his control was his biggest issue, as he issued 24 walks (6.8 walks per nine innings) and hit four more.
Gage, 31, was traded to the Mets from the Dodgers on July 7. In five appearances with Triple-A Syracuse, Gage did not allow a run. He struck out seven in 5.1 innings, earning three saves in the process.
