The 22-year-old center infielder and outfielder, who is The Mets’ No. 6 prospect in the midseason top 30 prospect rankings by SNY Joe De Mayo –“He continues to play well,” Mendoza said.

“He’s continuing to develop,” Mendoza said of Acuña, who entered Sunday’s game batting .263/.316/.366 with five homers and 31 RBIs in 80 games this season. “The way he’s hitting the ball and how he’s moving around the field defensively, he’s playing second base, shortstop, center field. So having that kind of versatility, someone who can play up the middle, is important. And the way he’s controlling the strike zone … he wants to be in the lineup. He’s playing with joy. All we’re getting right now from the Triple-A staff is that everything is really good with him.”

After the Mets acquired Acuña last July, Max Scherzer In a trade with the Texas Rangers, Acuña posted a .243/.317/.304 batting average with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 37 games with Double-A Binghamton.

Prior to the deal, in 84 games with the Rangers’ Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, Acuña posted a .315/.377/.453 batting average while adding seven home runs and 51 RBIs.

What do the Mets want to see from Acuña, who is A potential candidate for a promotion?

For Mendoza, the room for improvement is simple.

“Controlling the strike zone, hitting against strikes,” Mendoza said. “Basically, that’s the biggest thing for him, making sure he’s making good decisions with his swing and not chasing strikes as much. And he’s making progress in that aspect.”
