Buck Showalter has been fired as manager of the New York Mets as the team prepares to take a “new direction” after a miserable campaign.
Despite achieving the highest payroll in the MLB of nearly $348 million in 2023, via Spotracthe Mets were one of the league’s biggest disappointments after entering Sunday’s final games with a 74-86 record.
There was talk of a change at the helm ahead of the arrival of David Stearns as President of Baseball Operations this summer, and Showalter confirmed ahead of their final outing against the Phillies that he will not return as manager next season.
“I was honored to have the opportunity to lead a second New York team,” the 67-year-old, who enjoyed two seasons as Mets manager, told reporters. “I’m proud of what the Mets have done.
‘We have won almost 180 games in two years. Especially last year, as much fun as I’ve ever had playing the game. It reminded me why I always enjoyed this kind of work.”
