Mets DFA Omar Narvaez, acquire C Luis Torrens in trade with Yankees

Since things have not gone as planned in recent weeks, the Mets made some changes ahead of Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Among them was the veteran receiver. Omar Narvaez being designated for assignment, SNY Andy Martino reports.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Mets acquired the catcher Luis Torrens in a trade with yankees.

The 32-year-old backstop has been extremely disappointing on both sides of the ball since signing in New York on a two-year deal last offseason.

Narváez was hampered by a hamstring injury for most of last season, and with Francisco Alvarez Taking over the starting job, he appeared in just 42 games.

Álvarez remained the regular behind the plate to start this season, but when he was injured it was Thomas Nido who stepped forward and took advantage of the opportunity to have more playing time.

Aside from his hit last weekend, Narváez hasn’t contributed much this season, batting just .154 with two doubles and a .376 OPS in 28 games.

His time in New York now comes to an end with a disappointing .192/.254/.259 triple slash with two home runs and seven doubles in 77 games.

Torrens did not appear in a game at the major league level with the Yankees this season, but enjoyed some success with their Triple-A affiliate, batting .279 with an .807 OPS in 30 games.

The 28-year-old has spent parts of six seasons in the Major Leagues with the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs.

His time on the Mets roster may be short-lived, however, as Alvarez nears his return after beginning a minor league rehab assignment Thursday night.
