Meta has been hit by a major outage, knocking Facebook, Messenger and Instagram users across the United States out of service.
Tens of thousands of Americans are experiencing issues affecting apps and websites.
Downdetector, a site that monitors online outages, shows that the issues hit platforms owned by Mark Zuckerberg around 1 p.m. ET.
The user reports that they have been logged out of their accounts and a “session expiration” notification appears.

Meta has been hit by a major outage, taking Facebook and Instagram out of service across the US.
He issue reports sent to Downdetector show that most Facebook users are unable to log into their accounts (63 percent), followed by problems with the website (27 percent) and then the server connection fails (10 percent).
About 75 percent of Instagram outages are due to the app, followed by the website (14 percent) and account logins (10 percent).
And 78 percent of Messenger users can’t log in, 17 percent can’t send messages, and a small four percent don’t receive messages.
Large cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Tamp and Boston have reported problems with all three social networks.
Users have shared their frustrations on another social media platform, Elon Musk’s X.
X user Bruce Wayne shared, “I love that the first thing I do when Instagram isn’t working is come here just to make sure.”
