Real estate giant Meriton has suffered a data breach, joining a string of companies attacked by hackers in the past 12 months.

The company, known for its activities in real estate development and operation of serviced apartments, confirmed to ABC that it was attacked more than two months ago on January 14.

The stolen data is believed to include personal information such as bank details and birth certificates, employee-related details such as salary information, and HR issues.

ABC reported Wednesday that Meriton had linked the attack to an unknown third party, and said it had taken “appropriate” steps to notify up to 1,900 guests and workers of the breach.

It is also in contact with the Australian Cyber Security Center and the Australian Information Commissioner’s Office.

The attack, revealed earlier this month, harvested 7.9 million driver’s licenses, about 53,000 passport numbers and an additional 6.1 million records, including names, addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Tuesday urged business leaders to redouble efforts to keep their customers safe amid a surge in online financial fraud and identity theft.

More than $569 million was reported stolen in fraud in 2022, but that’s only 13 per cent of the actual figure, Gina Kaas-Gottlieb, chair of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, said at the Australian Financial Banking Summit.

Millions of people’s data was stolen last year in a series of high-profile hacks, including Medibank and Optus.

The AAP is seeking comment from Meriton.
