Menacing mistake of 4-year-old boy allegedly swallowing magnets mistaken for sparks after emergency surgery

A mother is urging online retailer Temu to take action after her son ingested small magnets from a set of magnetic building blocks, leading to life-threatening complications that required emergency surgery. Kaela Modery, of Maine, bought the toy for her four-year-old son Gage, only to discover that it contained dangerous and easily removable magnets.

In an emotional account of the incident, Kaela shared“When I was sweeping my son’s room, I noticed that under his bed there were some small magnets in a half-eaten cookie. “He obviously thought they were sprinkles and decided to put them on a cookie and eat it.” Kaela immediately took her son to the hospital after Gage began complaining of stomach pain and vomiting.

An x-ray revealed that Gage had swallowed seven of the toy’s magnets, causing his left and right colon to fuse, causing a life-threatening blockage. Kaela recalled: “They had to open his stomach and remove his entire intestine and individually go through his colon to look for the magnet because they couldn’t find it laparoscopically.”

During the emergency procedure, doctors feared the magnets could puncture his intestine and cause a fatal infection. “There was a risk of infection from the magnets piercing his intestines and if that had happened he would have died.” he told The Mirror US.

There would have been no intervention, no salvation for him. “I would have killed him,” Kaela said, expressing her terror. Fortunately, Gage made a full recovery after being hospitalized for five days, but doctors are unsure if the magnets will have any long-term effects on his colon.

Kaela, deeply shaken by the experience, called out Temu about the safety of their products, saying, “These little magnets damaged my son’s organs. They’re not screwed on, they’re just sitting in these little cubes. They were very poorly made.”

He expressed disappointment with Temu’s response, stating, “Temu told me they can guarantee this item is safe; it clearly is not.” Kaela added that she was not looking for money, but rather wanted the company to take responsibility for preventing future accidents.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Temu expressed concern about the incident and assured the family that the case is being investigated. “The safety and well-being of our customers are Temu’s top priorities,” the spokesperson said, noting that the product passed several safety tests and included a warning about choking risks. Despite this, Kaela remains dissatisfied and urges Temu to take more decisive action to prevent such incidents in the future.
